The famous Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight. Its development started in 1945, and it was inspired by the shape of a Browning .50-cal machine gun round. The first supersonic test flight occurred on 14 October 1947. A derivative ordered by the US Air Force (USAF) in 1948 was the Bell X-1A, which was an improved design featuring greater fuel capacity and hence a loner engine-burn time. The X-1A looked slightly different with its bubble canopy and longer fuselage, although it was powered by the same Reaction Motors XLR-11 rocket engine. It was intended for research of aerodynamic properties at speeds surpassing Mach 2. The Bell X-1A (with serial number 48-1384) first exceeded Mach 2 in November 1953, but the following month test pilot Captain “Chuck” Yeager achieved a speed record of Mach 2.44. Unfortunately, the experimental plane was later lost in an explosion in August 1955.
Joining earlier versions of the Bell X-1, Warbirds now has an excellent 1/144 scale model of the X-1A in its collection. Because of the fundamental differences between the X-1 and X-1A, the new model has received a brand new fuselage. In fact, Item No.51038 offers not one, but two, complete models in this set! The two models are different too - one is a realistic-looking replica, while the other has a novel transparent fuselage that allows a clear view of the aircraft’s innards. Both aircraft can be mounted together in flying mode on a twin metal stand, a configuration that produces a stunning exhibit.

Endeavour (OV-105) was the final of six Space Shuttles to be built by Rockwell International, and its construction was authorized by the US Congress in 1987. It was produced as a replacement for Challenger, which was lost during in a tragic launch accident in 1986. Endeavour utilized structural spares left over from construction of Discovery and Atlantis, as it was deemed cheaper to build the final Space Shuttle from spare parts rather than produce an entirely new craft. Endeavour took its name from the British ship that Captain James Cook used on his first voyage of discovery in 1768-71. Endeavour’s first flight occurred in May 1992, and its final journey to the International Space Station (ISS) took place in May 2011. Its 20-year career encompassed 25 forays into space. The latter half of its series of flights revolved around trips to the ISS.
It was scheduled to conduct the final Space Shuttle mission, but this task later fell to Atlantis. Instead, Endeavour performed the penultimate mission before the entire Space Shuttle was retired in 2011. The craft will eventually be exhibited at the California Science Center.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, this is the Year of the Dragon. Therefore, Cyber Hobby is celebrating the occasion with a 1/700 scale ship kit of HMS Dragon! This Royal Navy vessel is the fourth Type 45 air defense destroyer. HMS Daring was the lead ship of this new class, the UK’s first new destroyer type since the 1970s. A total of six ships are being constructed. Dragon was launched by BAE Systems Naval Ships in November 2008 and she is due for commissioning in the spring of 2012. The destroyer has a sleek and smooth profile designed to provide a low radar cross-section, and these Daring-class air warfare destroyers are among the world’s most advanced of their type. Their combat systems are based around the SAMPSON multifunction radar, S1850M 3-D air surveillance radar and Sea Viper missile system (with 48 Aster 15 and 30 air defense missiles and Sea Skua anti-ship missiles).
With recent items like LCS-1 and LCS-2, Dragon’s 1/700 scale ship kits have met an enthusiastic response from modelers. Following on from a 1/700 scale plastic kit of the first-of-class HMS Daring, now comes an upgraded and identically scaled HMS Dragon. Parts are formed from molds created by the very latest in technological and engineering design. The ship is reproduced in full detail, and the stealthy exterior is accurately proportioned. The enclosed radar tower is a sophisticated item, with various antennas extending from it at the correct angles. Lethal weapon systems like the 4.5-inch gun and air defense system are also supplied in remarkable detail. The kit includes a brand new Westland Merlin HM1 helicopter. Cartograf also offers red dragon markings for her bow, making this a true namesake of Dragon!

Germany’s first attempts at creating a heavy tank commenced in the early 1930s. Known as the Neubau-Fahrzeug (“New Construction Vehicle”), it was not a success, however. Slow-moving and boasting multiple turrets, it was ill equipped for the type of rapid, mobile warfare that blitzkrieg tactics required. For this reason, only five Neubau-Fahrzeug heavy tanks were built by Rheinmetall-Borsig (Rh-B). The first two prototypes were manufactured in 1934 out of mild steel so they were not suitable for combat. However, the three subsequent 25.8-ton armored tanks built in 1935 were shipped to Oslo in April 1940 and participated in the invasion of Norway. The latter trio featured a 3.7cm KwK L/45 cannon and 7.5cm KwK L/24 main gun set side by side in a turret designed by Krupp.

This Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2 is impressive in its camouflage colors of panzer gray and brown, and its appearance thus differs considerably from the previous one. The main turret plus the two machine gun turrets are precisely replicated. This was one monster of a tank, and now model collectors can own one finished in eye-catching camouflage colors!
