A four-issue miniseries released in 1986, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns tells the tale of a future world in which superheroes have retired. An older, angrier Bruce Wayne puts on the costume once again to save Gotham City and in the process encounters one of his most hated enemies, the Joker! Inspired by Miller's gritty style, the duo presents a dark, dynamic vision that'll look great on your shelf.

Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns Batman is much thicker and heavier than most representations of the character, and that's quite apparent here. The bulky Dark Knight kneels over the prone Joker, holding him down with one hand on his collar while pulling the other back in preparation for the final strike! Perfectly recreating the artwork, the statue is intricately detailed with special attention to Batman's powerful musculature, the rumpled clothing of the evil clown, the furious expression on the dark hero's face, and of course Joker's maniacal laughing. The painting too reflects Miller's artwork with stark colors and bold strokes.

Sculpted by Junnosuke Abe, The Dark Knight Returns Batman VS Joker stands nearly 12 inches tall (1/6th scale) on a special display base that really shows off the action of the scene. With his identity as Iron Man exposed, Tony Stark now faces government pressure to share his Iron Man armor technology with the military. Deep in the catacombs beneath the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and his companions, Willie and Short Round, have been captured by Mola Ram, high priest of Kali and leader of the Thuggee death cult. He explains to Dr. Jones that once he obtains the final two of five mystical Sankara Stones he will have the power to destroy the British Imperialists who have invaded their land and allow Kali, Hindu Goddess of Death, to rule over the world.

When Indy scoffs at this, Ram motions to his huge henchman who forces Indy's mouth open while another priest brings forward Ram's gruesome ceremonial chalice: a golden goblet fitted with a mummified human skull at its top. As Willie and Short Round watch in horror, Ram pours the blood-like potion down Indy's throat, bewitching Indy to become a thrall to the evil high priest.

The Schmidt version, more or less established as the prototype version, rose from mediocrity just like Hitler. He was trained and assigned to various factions of the Nazi effort---while secretly generating his own schemes. The US equivalent to the Red Skull was Captain America, and cannily the Skull and the Captain became archenemies. Exposed to a experimental gas vapors, the Red Skull was preserved (though ultimately imperfectly) just like Captain America. Later, the Skull would establish himself as a modern-day villain, although, generally speaking, most of his fellow super villains regard him with contempt.
