Batman: Early in The Dark Knight, Batman interrupts a disorganized three-way melee between Chechen, the Scarecrow and a handful of bumbling Batman impersonators; he decides afterwards that his original costume is weighing him down. Looking for a lighter costume that will provide him with a greater range of head movement, Bruce Wayne consults with Lucius Fox. Relying upon detective skills, gadgetry, and honed fighting prowess, Batman discovers his greatest adversary in the form of the Joker.
Requisitioned by Bruce Wayne from obscurity in Wayne Enterprises’ Applied Sciences Division, the Tumbler is tested and further modified by Wayne to serve as a means of solidifying Batman’s edge against Gotham City’s rampant criminal element. Outfitted with a reconfigurable driving cockpit, the heavily-armored Tumbler provides the option of ejecting the smaller Bat-pod cycle vehicle. Outfitted with a jet engine and stealth mode capacity, the Tumbler is equipped with frontward auto-cannons and a rocket launcher-powered grapnel. In Batman Begins, the previously disillusioned Bruce Wayne, having received intensive training with the League of Shadows, returns to Gotham City with the intention of undermining mob boss Carmine Falcone and Gotham’s corrupt police force. Further investigation of Falcone brings to light a new villain, the Scarecrow, and the latter’s scheme to flood Gotham’s water supply with a fear-inducing hallucinogenic.
