Excerpt from "Soldier 'I': The Story of an SAS Hero"

The Falklands! Two small islands to the north-east of Tierra del Fuega, two specks floating in the sea, like tiny scales dislodged from the great curl of the scorpion's tail that is South America. With a coastline as long as Norway's circumscribing a land mass no bigger than Wales, the Falklands are subject to relentless winds and the hazards of wind-chill factor that accompany them.

As my eyes adjusted to night vision, taking the inkiness out of the purple-black surroundings, my thoughts turned to the achievements of British forces over the last few weeks. In very little time, a task force of over a hundred ships had sailed 8,000 miles and landed between 9,000 and 10,000 men on an enemy-occupied coastline, and the men had fought to within an ace of total victory.

The Sir Lancelot had been hit by Skyhawks and abandoned with two unexploded bombs aboard. A naval bomb-disposal team had removed the bombs and it now made an excellent base for an SAS QRF (quick-reaction force). Covert teams could now move at a minute's notice to locations on East or West Falkland.

The cocking handle of my XM203 snapped forward, chambering the first 5.56mm round. I applied the safety-catch. My fingers checked the smooth metallic cases of the 40mm bombs located in the pockets and the bandoliers criss-crossing my chest. Cradling the loaded rifle in the crook of my left arm, I stood motionless in the growing darkness.

We undertook several clandestine, precisely targeted operations. Like acupuncture needles stimulating the flow of energy through the body, our activities quickened the pulse of war and hastened the drive for victory. Tumbledown fell. Two Sisters fell. The Gurkhas took control of Mount William. It was during one of our secret sorties that the radio burst into life: 'The white flag is flying over Port Stanley.' Endgame!

1/72 10.5cm StuH.42 Ausf.G 8th SS-Kavallerie Division "Florian Geyer"

1/72 10.5cm StuH.42 Ausf.G 8th SS-Kavallerie Division "Florian Geyer"

1/72 10.5cm StuH.42 Ausf.G, 8th SS-Kavallerie Division "Florian Geyer", Eastern Front 1944

The StuH.42 featured an electrically fired 10.5cm leFH 18 howitzer fitted in the superstructure instead of the more usual anti-tank cannon. A total of 1,211 StuH.42 vehicles were produced from October 1942 till the end of the war. These vehicles were issued to Sturmgeschütz brigades to support regular StuG.IIIs. One unit to operate the StuH.42 on the Eastern Front was the 8th Cavalry Division “Florian Geyer”. It fought on the Eastern Front before being eventually destroyed in Budapest in 1945. One vehicle from this unit fighting in the winter of 1944 has been superbly recreated in miniature by Dragon Armor. It wears a neat coat of whitewash over its sand-colored basecoat. The only visible tactical markings are Balkankreuz on the superstructure sides. The 1/72 scale model has been masterfully finished, and the StuH.42 Ausf.G self-propelled howitzer will blend in well with a snowy environment…or alternatively stand out in a model collection!

1/72 Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2 Versuchsfahrzeug, Germany 1935

1/72 Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2 Versuchsfahrzeug, Germany 1935

German’s first attempts at creating a heavy tank commenced in the early 1930s. Known as the Neubau-Fahrzeug (“New Construction Vehicle”), it was not a success, however. Slow-moving and boasting multiple turrets, it was ill equipped for the type of rapid, mobile warfare that blitzkrieg tactics required. For this reason, only five Neubau-Fahrzeug heavy tanks were built by Rheinmetall-Borsig (Rh-B). The first two prototypes (numbers 1-2) were manufactured in 1934 out of mild steel so they were not suitable for combat. The design featured a 3.7cm KwK L/45 cannon and a 7.5cm KwK L/24 main gun. The three 25.8-ton armored tanks (numbers 3-5) built in 1935 participated in the 1940 invasion of Norway.

Dragon Armor is offering a 1/72 scale model of the second Neubau-Fahrzeug prototype. This Neubau-Fahrzeug Nr.2 is impressive in its rare camouflage colors of green, brown and sand, perhaps a portent of the schemes that would later appear during WWII. As a prototype, the model does not bear any tactical markings, although it was used at a training school until 1940. The turrets are precisely replicated, and they are notably different to those mounted on the three production tanks. This was one monster of a tank, and now modelers can own one bedecked in eye-catching colors!

1/72 Apollo 16 "Lunar Highlands Exploration"

1/72 Apollo 16 "Lunar Highlands Exploration"

1/72 Apollo 16 "Lunar Highlands Exploration" CSM + LM + Lunar Rover + Astronauts (Space)

NASA’s Apollo space program successfully placed man on the Moon, but even after this milestone had been achieved, a number of other missions followed. One was Apollo 16, which was the fifth flight to land man on the Moon. However, this scientific mission stands out as the first to touch down in a highlands area, namely the Descartes Highlands. Apollo 16 blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center on 16 April 1972 and landed on the Moon five days later. The Lunar Module (LM) christened Orion contained the program’s second Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), which enabled astronauts to explore further afield. During the Apollo 16 mission, LRV-002 covered a total distance of 26.55km, although it never strayed more than 4.5km from the LM because the crew needed to be able to walk back to their spacecraft in case of a breakdown! Astronaut set the speed record for a vehicle driving on the Moon – 18km/h – a record that has stood the test of time! The astronauts collected 94.7kg of lunar samples whilst conducting scientific experiments. Eventually the lunar ascent module docked with the orbiting Command/Service Module (CSM) named Casper before heading home.

Dragon’s Space Collection is proud to offer a full set representing the important Apollo 16 mission. For the first time ever, a miniature Lunar Rover is included in the series. The vehicle is accurately made to 1/72 scale, and it is beautifully detailed and painted. The LRV is made even more eye-catching by the fact that an astronaut is seated behind the wheel as he explores the lunar surface. The inclusion of the CSM, LM and an additional astronaut on the Moon makes for an amazing diorama setting. It’s incredible that so much can fit inside a single box, but each item has been carefully molded and correctly painted. Now collectors can explore this fine high-flying 1/72 scale set depicting the Apollo 16 mission!

1/200 Arvo Vulcan B.2 Falklands War 30th Anniversary Series by Dragon

1/200 Arvo Vulcan B.2 Falklands War 30th Anniversary Series by Dragon

For many years, the jet-powered Avro Vulcan formed an important part of Great Britain’s nuclear deterrent strategy. Fortunately the aircraft was never called upon to deliver nuclear weapons, and its only operational use was during the Falklands War in 1982. Operation Black Buck saw three Vulcan B.2 bombers performing conventional bombing tasks against Argentinian targets. With the help of Victor aerial refueling tankers, the Vulcans flew 6,259km from Ascension Island, accomplishing the world’s longest-range raid up till that time. The first raid against Port Stanley rendered the airfield unusable to Argentinian fighters on May 1. In total, Vulcans flew three missions against the airfield and two missions against radar installations, and they were especially fitted with an AN/ALQ-101 electronic countermeasures pod and AGM-45A Shrike anti-radar missiles.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, Dragon is releasing a 1/200 scale plastic kit of the Vulcan. The model depicts the B.2 variants that were especially prepared and modified for the Falklands conflict, including the aircraft with the serial number XM607 that carried out the first raid on 1 May 1982. In this one attack, it dropped 21 bombs. The model includes a pair of newly tooled Shrike missiles to fit on the improvised pylons on the Vulcan B.2’s wings. The details on the aircraft itself are sharply molded and modelers will find it assembles with satisfying ease. This model kit is a fitting tribute as Britain remembers this decisive campaign.

1/35 BRDM-2/3 (2 in 1) + Soviet Tank Crew (Orange)

1/35 BRDM-2/3 (2 in 1) + Soviet Tank Crew (Orange)

- Bonus Soviet Tank Crew (5 figures set)
- 2 in 1 featuring a Soviet BRDM-2 or BRDM-3 model

Orange Box has forged a well-earned reputation for offering innovative 1/35 scale armored vehicle and figure combinations at bargain prices. The newest release adds to this legend with a modern military set featuring a Soviet BRDM-2 (or BRDM-3) plus Soviet crewmen. The BRDM is a well-known Soviet armored reconnaissance vehicle, and it was exported to a wide range of countries. The 4x4 vehicle had a four-man crew, and mobility was aided by a centralized tire inflation system and by fitting belly wheels that could be lowered for cross-country driving. Powered by a GAZ-41 V8 engine, the BRDM-2 was amphibious thanks to a water jet in the rear hull. The vehicle’s armament was the same as the BTR-60PB – a 14.5mm KPVT heavy machine gun and a coaxial 7.62mm PKT machine gun mounted in a turret. The BRDM-2 entered Red Army service in 1962 and production continued until 1989, by which time 7,200 vehicles had been produced.

This Orange Box set allows modelers to build either a 1/35 scale BRDM-2 or BRDM-3 model. The latter designation describes the 9P124 variant of the BRDM-2. This anti-tank vehicle carried four 9M17M Skorpion-M antitank guided missiles (ATGM) also known by their NATO reporting name of AT-2B Swatter B. The ATGM launcher unit was elevated above the hull for firing. This popular plastic kit was produced by Dragon some time ago, which means they’re extremely difficult to get hold of nowadays. This release is thus very welcome, boosted by the fact that it comes with a set of five Soviet crewmen. The various realistic poses allow a range of diorama possibilities. And all of this comes with an unbeatably good Orange Box price!
