1/72 Sd.Kfz.171 Panther D, Early Production by Dragon

1/72 Sd.Kfz.171 Panther D, Early Production by Dragon

While it’s the impressive Tiger I tank that usually attracts the most attention, it was the Panther that in the long run was a more important tank to Germany during WWII. This approximately 45-tonne medium tank represented a good balance of well-sloped armor protection, lethal firepower and able cross-country mobility, the design being inspired by the highly successful Russian T-34. Beginning in December 1942, a total of 842 Ausf.D examples were manufactured through to September 1943, at which time it was superceded by the improved Ausf.A. Its combat debut occurred during Operation Zitadelle in the titanic Battle of Kursk on the Eastern Front, and the Sd.Kfz.171 Panther fought bravely until the dying days of the Third Reich. Its 7.5cm KwK 42 L/70 cannon took a heavy toll on enemy armored vehicles whenever and wherever they were encountered. The Ausf.D is easily identified by the letterbox hatch opening for the glacis machine gun, pistol ports on the turret sides and a drum cupola.

Dragon has a brand new 1/72 scale kit of the Panther Ausf.D Early Production, and modelers are certainly in for a treat with it! The plastic kit is an almost completely new tooling. In fact, the only item carried over from the Ausf.G released recently is the DS tracks! The upper hull is made as a single piece thanks to the clever use of slide molds. The lower hull tub has been formed the same way, thus ensuring a stable and accurate foundation for the rest of the build. All the appropriate characteristics of an Ausf.D variant are present. This Panther is full of delightful details…enough to have 1/72 scale model-makers purring with pleasure.

1/6 German Bicycle w/Panzerfaust 60 by Dragon

1/6 German Bicycle w/Panzerfaust 60 by Dragon

Features:
- Panzerfaust 60 warhead can be disassembled from launch tube
- The rear sight and trigger mechanism can be flipped up/down
- Authentic-looking wheels and tires
- Realistic carrier reproduced on rear of bicycle
- Pedals attached to chainring can rotate
- Handlebars steer front wheel just like the real bicycle
- Delicate headlamp included
- Saddle w/springs can be adjusted to different heights

Despite its much-vaunted, powerful panzer divisions, the German military was far from being wholly mechanized during WWII. Indeed, many infantrymen had to rely on their own feet, on horses, or if they were lucky, on the humble bicycle. Dragon’s latest 1/6 scale model kit celebrates the German military bicycle so typically used throughout the war. This particular bike is fitted with a rear rack to which various items of personal gear can be fitted. There is also a frame on the front specifically designed to carry a pair of Panzerfaust antitank weapons. This weapon first appeared in 1942 and it comprised of a disposable launch tube that fired a high-explosive antitank warhead. The Panzerfaust 60 was the most common type, and production in the thousands commenced in September 1944. The 6.1kg weapon had a practical range of 60m and it could defeat up to 200mm of armor. The model kit includes two highly detailed Panzerfaust 60s, and they are complete with a flip-up sight and trigger mechanism. Decals are also included for the weapons’ markings.

This German bike is highly detailed, as demonstrated by the fineness of the spokes on the wheels. Even the bicycle pump mounted on the frame is included. The handlebars can be turned and the pedals rotated. This means the bike can be adjusted to provide that exact nuance a modeler is seeking for their display. There is also a front-mounted headlamp and a spring saddle. This 1/6 scale bicycle kit makes for the ultimate antitank weapon – pedal power reigns supreme!

1/72 Panther G Late Production, Easterm Front 1944-45

1/72 Panther G Late Production, Easterm Front 1944-45

1/72 Panther G Late Production, Easterm Front 1944-45 - Black Knight Comic Series
Dragon Armor has already produced one 1/72 scale model of a German Panther representing a tank from the extremely popular Black Knight comic book originating in Japan. Now another stunning collectible item from the same series has arrived! In contrast to the Early-Production Panther G earlier, this newest item is a Panther Ausf.G Late Production type fighting on the Eastern Front in the 1944-45 timeframe. Utilizing accurately detailed molds from previous 1/72 scale renditions of this famous German tank, the assembled model has been masterfully painted in an appropriate three-color camouflage scheme just like those that appear in the Japanese comic books.

This Panther Ausf.G belonging to the combat-experienced commander carries the distinctive tactical markings of the Black Knight unit. The tank wears an authentic-looking Zimmerit coating too. Another special feature of this finely detailed miniature is the dioramic card background fitted inside the display box. This colored scenic backdrop was designed and illustrated by none other than the comic artist Motofumi Kobayashi himself! The quality of the artwork, as well as the uncompromising craftsmanship of the model, is destined to make this item as equally sought after as the first Black Knight tank from Dragon Armor. This is a must-have for all Black Knight fans.

1/144 North American X-15A-2 "Roll-Out"

1/144 North American X-15A-2 "Roll-Out"

Features:
- Fully detailed 1/144 Bell X-15A-2
- Stylish metal stand included
- Historically accurate markings
- Pre-assembled

The experimental X-15 built by North American Aviation was an astonishing craft. As both an aircraft and a spaceplane, it set speed and altitude records at the edge of outer space in the 1960s. Such was its performance envelope that some pilots could also hold claim to being astronauts. Three X-15 aircraft were manufactured and test-flown 199 times, thus producing invaluable data that would help future aircraft and space programs. The second X-15A aircraft to be manufactured (serial number 56-6671) was rebuilt after a landing accident, and during this process its length was extended by 730mm. Renamed X-15A-2, it also featured a pair of auxiliary fuel tanks mounted under the fuselage, plus heat-resistant surfaces. It first flew on 28 June 1964, with this hypersonic craft creating the record for the fastest ever manned rocket-powered aircraft with a speed of Mach 6.32 (a staggering 7,274km/h). X-15A-2 remains on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.

Dragon Warbirds is offering an X-15A-2 model made to 1/144 scale. The model depicts the craft as it appeared at its rollout ceremony shortly before performing its record-breaking flight. The die-cast model captures perfectly the cylindrical form of the X-15 with its thick dorsal and ventral stabilizers, plus the new auxiliary fuel tanks are molded in place. This item has quite a distinct difference in appearance compared to the previous X-15A in Dragon’s X-plane series, including the specific markings applied accurately to the aircraft. This X-15A-2 is sure to send collectors soaring into the stratosphere of pleasure!
