1/700 H.M.S. Invincible Light Aircraft Carrier - Falklands War 30th Anniversary :
Features:
- Superstructure realistically reproduced
- Finely scaled radar produced in photo-etched parts

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War that was waged between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The Royal Navy (RN) played a pivotal role in recapturing the South Atlantic islands, and one important element of the naval task force sent to perform this mission was HMS Invincible (R05). Invincible was the lead ship in a class of three light aircraft carriers. She was commissioned on 11 July 1980, just two years before the Falklands conflict broke out. In actual fact, after an agreement reached in February 1982, she was earmarked for sale to the Royal Australian Navy for the price of £175 million. Instead, just three days after Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982, she was steaming alongside the carrier Hermes towards the South Atlantic. Her bulging complement of aircraft included eight Sea Harriers and twelve Sea King helicopters that would take off and land on her 170m-long ski jump deck in continuous operations against Argentine forces. Invincible and her embarked aircraft played an important role in recapturing the islands.

Dragon is pleased to inform ship-loving modelers that a fine 1/700 scale model of this famous British light carrier is now available again. A kit of HMS Invincible was previously released a number of years ago, but Dragon’s engineers have overhauled it and brought it up to date in time for this anniversary year. The special bonuses for 2012 are a set of completely new photo-etched parts, as well as new Cartograf decals. The 22,000-ton HMS Invincible was never sold to Australia, and it later served in operations in the Balkans and against Iraq, before she was eventually decommissioned in 2005. Now, however, modelers can get their hands on this special 30th anniversary edition of the famous carrier. In terms of detail and accuracy, this kit is invincible!

1/700 H.M.S. Sheffield Type 42 Destroyer Batch 1 Falklands War

1/700 H.M.S. Sheffield Type 42 Destroyer Batch 1 Falklands War

1/700 H.M.S. Sheffield Type 42 Destroyer Batch 1 - Falklands War 30th Anniversary (2 in 1) :
Features:
- Photo-etched handrails add extra refinement
- Optional photo-etched rotor blades for on-board helicopter
- Antenna and radar reproduced with photo-etched parts
- 4.5-inch L/45 Vickers Mark 8 gun

It is exactly 30 years since the Falklands War broke out between Argentina and the United Kingdom, a conflict initiated by the Argentine invasion of the South Atlantic islands. To counter the occupation, the Royal Navy (RN) dispatched a naval task force and one of its members was the Type 42 guided-missile destroyer HMS Sheffield (D80). A total of 14 Type 42 vessels were built for the RN, and ironically, two were also constructed for the Argentinian Navy. Commissioned on 16 February 1975, HMS Sheffield was the first of class, and it is best known as being one of the ships sunk during the Falklands War. Sheffield’s demise came about on 4 May 1982 when she was struck amidships by an AM39 Exocet sea-skimming anti-ship missile. Caught totally off-guard by the attack, the Exocet had been launched more than 30km away from a Super Etendard aircraft from the Argentine Navy. Even though the missile failed to detonate, its impact holed the hull and severed fire mains, which meant the crew could not extinguish the resulting fires. HMS Sheffield eventually foundered on 10 May and 20 crewmen lost their lives.

In Dragon’s series of models commemorating the Falklands War, the next subject to be released is a 1/700 scale kit of HMS Sheffield. This Type 42 guided-missile destroyer kit appeared in Dragon’s range some time ago, but it has been specially updated for this special edition. As a bonus, the kit offers a set of new photo-etched components that elevate this kit to a whole new level of finesse and detail. It also features newly created Cartograf decals. Significantly, Sheffield was the first RN vessel sunk in action since WWII, and this release from Dragon commemorates her contribution to this short but intense conflict of 1982.

The T-34, the mainstay tank of the Red Army during WWII, has been described as the most important weapon that helped Russia win the war in the East. It was the most widely produced tank of the war, and as can be expected, a number of variants evolved throughout its lifetime. Dragon has chosen one of its important incarnations as the canvas for its next 1/35 scale plastic kit. The item is a T-34/76 Model 1943 tank built by Factory No.112 in Gorky, a facility also known as Krasnoye Sormovo. This T-34 type featured a 76mm cannon in a hexagonal-shaped turret. The two-man cast turret possessed distinctive soft edges, and it comprised three main pieces – the walls, roof and ring. It was on this turret that a cupola for the commander was finally incorporated in the summer of 1943.

Dragon has done a fine job of replicating in 1/35 scale the characteristics peculiar to this type. The soft-edged turret is a particular feature of the kit, and its cast texture is amazingly realistic. The turret, which comes from completely new toolings, is fitted with the correct cupola for the commander’s use.

This model is simply bulging with detail, and there are photo-etched parts to represent fine elements such as the engine deck grills and louvers that cannot be accurately portrayed in plastic. The original tank operated on rubber-tired road wheels that have been newly tooled just for this kit, and the tank’s also shod in Magic Tracks that assemble quickly and easily. This is an exciting rendition of the T-34/76 Mod.1943 from Gorky!

1/35 "Defense of the Reich" w/Gen 2 Gear (4 Figures Set)

1/35 "Defense of the Reich" w/Gen 2 Gear (4 Figures Set)

By 1944 the tide of war had truly turned and Germany found itself retreating on every front. Its forces, already depleted by five years of grueling combat, were being pushed further and further back towards the borders of the Third Reich. By 1945, the frontiers of the Fatherland itself were being breached by Allied units in both the east and west. The latest inspirational 1/35 scale figure set from Dragon depicts four German soldiers tasked with defending the country in the 1944-45 period.

The quartet is notable in the variety of uniforms, accoutrements and weapons that they possess. No longer were they wearing the orderly and well-tailored field gray uniforms of the blitzkrieg period. Instead, the soldiers in this set here wear camouflage smocks, a Fallschirmjäger jumpsuit and even one in a special Hitler Jugend (“Hitler Youth”) winter uniform. Their collection of weapons also reflects the frenetic late-war period. In evidence there’s an MP 44 assault rifle, Kar 98k rifle, Gewehr 43 semi-automatic rifle and FG 42 rifle as used by elite paratroopers. The HJ member is also carrying a Panzerfaust 100m, a single-shot anti-tank rocket produced in quantity from September 1944 onwards. These varied figures offer unlimited utility for creators of dioramas and vignettes. Sharply sculpted in realistic poses, these well-researched figures reflect the desperate final months of WWII.

1/72 Apollo 12 "Lunar Landing" by Dragon

1/72 Apollo 12 "Lunar Landing" by Dragon

1/72 Apollo 12 "Lunar Landing" , CSM + Lunar Module "Interpid" + Surveyor 3 + Astronauts
Features:
- 1/72 true-to-scale precision model
- Displayable spacecraft with high collectable value
- Aesthetically pleasing color finish with delicate imprinted markings

Apollo 11 is clearly the most famous mission of the whole Apollo program that put man on the Moon, this momentous event occurring on 20 July 1969. The mission four months afterwards, Apollo 12, was the second manned flight to the lunar surface. Blasting off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Lunar Module (LM) containing the astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean landed on a site at 3.01239° S latitude, 23.42157° W longitude, on 19 November 1969. The LM, which was christened Intrepid, touched down with pinpoint accuracy just 160m from the unmanned Surveyor 3 probe that had been sitting on the Moon’s surface for the past 31 months. They spent more than 30 hours on the Moon performing scientific tasks such as collecting rock samples and measuring the Moon’s seismic activity, magnetic field and solar wind flux. Samples from the unmanned Surveyor 3 probe were collected, this being the only occasion that humans have ever recovered a probe sent to another world.

Dragon’s newest model in its exciting Space Collection represents the Apollo 12 mission. Indeed, a stunning diorama scene is created in 1/72 scale. The set includes the Intrepid LM on a simulated Ocean of Storms lunar surface alongside the Surveyor 3 probe. The open hatch allows viewers a glimpse of the cramped spacecraft interior. Furthermore, the model comes with two astronaut figures, recovering elements from Surveyor 3. The set also features the orbiting Command/Service Module (CSM) Yankee Clipper that’s displayed on an integral stand. This fine 1/72 scale set enables collectors to own an instant diorama of this scientifically important Apollo 12 mission.

1/72 Mercury "Liberty Bell 7" Spacecraft (Space) by Dragon

1/72 Mercury "Liberty Bell 7" Spacecraft (Space) by Dragon

NASA's Mercury program was a series of manned spaceflights in the important buildup to putting man on the Moon. Spacecraft "Liberty Bell 7" flew 480km at a maximum altitude of 190km and maximum speed of 1,969m/s. The naming is because of the shape of the craft, as well as an association with the original Liberty Bell. Indeed, a "crack" was painted onto the side of the craft to add to the illusion. Of interest, the 1,286kg Liberty Bell 7 was the first Mercury craft with a centerline trapezoid-shaped window instead of two portholes.

Another innovation with this spacecraft was an explosive hatch release that allowed a rapid emergency escape. After performing its flight, Liberty Bell 7 splashed down in the ocean, although the craft subsequently sank to the bottom before it could be retrieved by helicopter. As a fitting final note, the Mercury spacecraft was salvaged 38 years later in 1999.

NASA’s Space Shuttle fleet consisted of six craft, and the fourth operational spacecraft was Atlantis (OV-104). In fact, it was manufactured in approximately half the time needed to produce Columbia (the first Space Shuttle to fly into space), plus it was some 3.5 tons lighter. This Space Shuttle built by Rockwell International was delivered to NASA in 1985 and it undertook its maiden flight into space in October the same year. One of its most notable missions (STS-71) commenced on 27 June 1995, when the spacecraft blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center, docking to the Russian Mir Space Station.

The 80-ton Atlantis was the final Space Shuttle to fly, its last mission blasting off on 8 July 2011 before it joined the rest of the fleet in retirement. Atlantis had orbited the Earth a staggering 4,848 times and traveled some 126 million miles by the time of its well-earned retirement. However, STS-71 remains one of the most enduring milestones of the craft’s career. Collectors can celebrate Atlantis’ legacy with a fine 1/400 scale model from Dragon Wings. In remarkable and accurate detail, the model represents Atlantis as it appeared on this important mission.
