Worldwide Inc., formerly
Marvel Publishing, Inc. and Marvel Comics Group, an American pu
blisher of comic books and
related media. In 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel
Entertainment, Marvel
Worldwide's parent company.
Marvel started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early
1950s had generally become
known as Atlas Comics. Marvel's modern incarnation dates from 1
961, the year that the
company launched The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles
created by Stan Lee, Jack
Kirby, Steve Ditko and many others.
Kamala Khan is a fictional superheroine appearing in American c
omic books published by
Marvel Comics. Created by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacke
r, writer G. Willow
Wilson and artist Adrian Alphona, Khan is Marvel's first Muslim
character to headline her own
comic book. Khan made her first appearance in Captain Marvel #1
4 (August 2013) before
going on to star in the solo series Ms. Marvel, which debuted i
n February 2014.
Within the Marvel Universe, Khan is a teenage Pakistani America
n from Jersey City, New
Jersey with shapeshifting abilities, who discovers that she has
Inhuman genes in the
aftermath of the "Inhumanity" storyline and assumes the mantle
of Ms. Marvel from her idol
Carol Danvers after Danvers becomes Captain Marvel. Marvel's an
nouncement that a Muslim
character would headline a comic book was met with widespread r
eaction and the first
volume of Ms. Marvel won the Hugo Award for best graphic story
in 2015.
