The Marvel Universe is the shared fictional univers
e where most
comic book titles published by Marvel Comics take p
lace,
including those featuring Marvel's most familiar ch
aracters, such
as Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, and Captain Ame
rica.
The Marvel Universe is further depicted as existing
within a
"multiverse" consisting of thousands of separate un
iverses, all of
which are the creations of Marvel Comics and all of
which are, in
a sense, "Marvel universes". In this context, "Marv
el Universe" is
taken to refer to the mainstream Marvel continuity,
which is
known as Earth-616.
Born circa 1928, Natalia "Natasha" Romanova was app
arently
orphaned as a child when she was trapped in a burni
ng building
during an early attack on Stalingrad by enemy force
s. Ivan
Petrovitch Bezukhov, a Soviet soldier, found Natash
a in the inferno
and rescued her. Although Ivan kept a close eye on
Natasha as she
grew, by the late 1930s she had attracted the atten
tion of Soviet
intelligence, which began her training. In 1941, sh
e was almost
brainwashed into serving the ninja clan the Hand, b
ut was saved by
Ivan, Logan (James Howlett, later Wolverine) and Ca
ptain America.
Following World War II, Natasha was recruited to be
come part of
the Black Widow Program, a team of elite female sle
eper agents.
Among the Widow’s instructors was the Winter Soldie
r, formerly
Captain America’s sidekick Bucky (James Barnes); Na
tasha studied
as a ballerina to cover for her true occupation. Th
e Soviet state
eventually arranged for Natasha to marry Alexi Shos
takov, a
champion test pilot. After a few years of a happy m
