As a young boy, Magneto (born Erik Magnus Lehnsherr) was interred in the Auschwitz concentration camp, a victim of the inhumanity suffered during World War II. Like the serial number tattooed on his arm, he carries with him the memories of mankind's capacity for cruelty. A mutant endowed with the power to control magnetism, he fears that history will repeat itself and humankind will subject mutants to a modern holocaust. In his quest to prevent this, his extremist viewpoints and militant methods have branded him as a zealot and an outlaw, fueling a life-long conflict with one of his dearest friends, Charles Xavier. Where Xavier and his X-men seek peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants (Homo-Superior), Magneto and his "Brotherhood of Mutants" subscribe to a doctrine of mutant self-reliance and separatism. Magneto's charisma and "the ends justify the means" philosophy have gained him countless followers, who alongside him continue to threaten mankind and any mutant standing in the way of his dream.
