Weighing 68 tons, Germany’s Kingtiger tank entered combat service in mid-1944. It was an impressive vehicle, and being the final tank design to enter production during WWII, it could be seen as the pinnacle of German tank design. The most common version had the angular Henschel turret that eliminated the frontal shot trap of the original Porsche turret. The Kingtiger was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. This formidable fighting machine was embroiled in the final Battle of Berlin, a conflict that raged from 20 April to 2 May 1945. Soviet units remorselessly pummeled the German capital to finally bring the war in Europe to an end. A handful of Kingtigers were involved in this final battle. Every one of them was lost defending the crumbling heart of the Third Reich.

Dragon Armor has launched a fantastic 1/72 scale model of a Tiger II fighting in the Battle of Berlin. The model is a Henschel Production version with the appropriate turret. The late-war “ambush” camouflage scheme features red-brown and sand-yellow colors, and it is accurately painted in miniature. In keeping with its late-war use, this model Kingtiger is devoid of any tactical markings. This model Kingtiger, backed into a corner in the final act of war in Europe, is a masterpiece of detail and painting.

WWII produced some novel weapon and vehicle designs, and one of the more unusual was certainly the British Welbike. This miniature motorcycle, the smallest ever employed by the British military, was designed for use by clandestine members of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). A total of 3,641 Welbikes were manufactured by the Excelsior Motor Company from 1942-45. An air-cooled Villiers 98cc engine powered the machine to a top speed of 48km/h although this must have been bumpy since it possessed no suspension and there was only a rear brake! It weighed a mere 32kg (minus its 3.7-liter load of fuel that offered a 144km range) and it could fit inside a parachute airdrop container. In the end, the SOE didn’t use the Welbike much, but it did become popular with paratroopers of the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions. The Welbike was thus used in such airborne operations as Market Garden in Arnhem, but commandoes also used them in landings at Anzio and Normandy.

Dragon has produced a superb 1/6 scale version of the Welbike. Just like the full-size motorcycle, the handlebars twist into position before the machine’s ridden off into battle. On the original Welbike the time taken from recovery from an airborne drop to being ridden away was supposed to take just 11 seconds! Every detail of the unique machine is recreated beautifully, right down to accurate tire tread patterns, the spoked wheels and the two-stroke engine. The handlebars are steerable, and the saddle has a fully functioning height adjustment. Thus this model Welbike can be readily adapted to a vignette featuring a suitable British paratrooper or commando from the Dragon 1/6 Action Figure range. This model Welbike is well done indeed!

At the time of its entry into WWII, the USA relied heavily on the M3 Lee tank. Very early on it was realized there was a need for an armored and fully tracked self-propelled howitzer able to keep pace with armored formations. The resulting design, based on the M3 chassis and featuring an M2 105mm gun, was the 105mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7. In British service it was, due to the .50-cal machine gun mounted in a prominent pulpit-like structure, called the Priest. Production of the 22.97-tonne vehicle commenced in April 1942, and a total of 2,814 M7s were eventually built. Early M7 Priests served with both the US Army and the British in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Each US armored division featured three battalions of the successful M7.

Dragon’s new 1/35 scale kit of the M7 Priest depicts an Early-Production type. It builds on the popular success of the Mid-Production kit (Item No.6637), and it features correct characteristics such as the howitzer (with an aluminum barrel featuring delicate rifling), ammunition stowage, transmission cover and M3-type bogie suspension. Among the many newly tooled parts are the side-armor plates for the hull, and new stowage bins on the rear of the hull. The interior of the main fighting compartment is particularly well done with full detail such as the 105mm M2 howitzer, stowed and ready-to-use ammunition rounds, intricate driver’s compartment and complete transmission. With the arrival of this kit, those modelers waiting for an Early-Production version of the M7 Priest will now be able to offer up a prayer of thanks!
